The NEw camera

My new Pentax 645z

This past summer my ol’ reliable 5DmIII sadly died. After it suddenly stopped working before a big shoot, forcing me to ride from Kondae to Junggu and back, it never really turned on properly again. It was my first “real” camera and served me well for 10 years.

So I crowdsourced some options and ultimately decided to choose between two cameras. The first option was a 5DmIV, a fantastic camera with something I was pretty thirsty for: face detection auto focus. A pretty new technology, or at least new in the last 10 years. I’ve never bought a new camera and wasn’t thinking of doing it now.

The second option is what I ended up with. A medium format Pentax 645z. I hadn’t even realized there were reasonable priced medium format DSLRs out there, which was ultimately a foolish thought. Everything is available online if you look hard enough. And the very first one I found came with fewer than 6000 actuations and 5 lenses for the same price as a new body alone. #notaproductphotographer

Here I should particularly thank Matt of Seoul Boudoir for letting me get some hands-on experience with his 645z before taking possession of mine. We had a fantastic shoot with Valentina, Pat, and Latifa at the studio. Really exploring the camera let me get a head start on falling in love with it.

I am considering allowing it to be rented out for shoots here at the studio. If this piques your interest, send me a message to discuss.
